“Language is the dress of thought” - Johnson For better or for worse , English has widely become today a world-language and our own freedom movement was inspired by our contact with English thought. The spirit of liberty , of democracy and of science was imbibed by those who became top ranking leaders in the struggle for Indian freedom. English certainly had a liberalizing effect on our age-old conservatism and orthodoxy. We became progressive in outlook and produced some of the greatest thinkers , scientists and statesmen as a result of our contact with English. We should learn English today , not as an imperial language imposed upon us by foreigners , but as free Indians without inhibitions and complexes of inferiority or superiority . We choose English today voluntarily for the sake of its utility in raising our standards of life and thought. We should learn it as we learn any other foreign language.
